About the show

Which emotion is it that can trump all others? Why it’s true love of course!  Baronet, Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre’s son Alexis is to be engaged to his old flame Lady Sangazure’s daughter Aline, and Alexis is keen to share the love he feels for Aline with all the people of Ploverleigh! With the help of the Sorcerer, John Wellington Wells, a special love potion finds its way to the lips of the unmarried population of the village who, upon initially falling asleep, awake to fall in love with the first person they see! With comically mismatched couples everywhere they turn, hilarious – and not so hilarious – consequences become apparent.

This 1877 comical opera was Gilbert and Sullivan’s third collaboration and showcases, for the first time, all of the typical features of a G&S opera such as the patter song, the love duet and the soprano aria.  It is less often performed than other collaborations between the pair but has the charm and fun of a true operetta.
