About the show

1663: a bawdy and troublesome time. The theatres have just reopened and the first English actresses appear on the stage. These women are the pioneers, fighting for their careers and a genuine status as artists equal with the male actors. Into this world crashes Nell Gwyn, determined to work her way up from orange-seller to actress. But "actress" to most 17th century gentlemen is just a step away from "whore”…giving these ‘playhouse creatures’ a challenge to be accepted and respected in a man’s world.

A coarse, erudite, funny and moving slice of theatre.
